How and when to track the progress of your hair loss treatment

The Tools

Tracking your progress when using a hair loss treatment is simple. With the introduction of smart phones, taking and keeping a photographic record at several points along the way is done in minutes and is very effective – providing they are done correctly. So the tool is your phone.

Know what to expect from your treatment

Understanding what to expect from your treatment will help you understand when the key stages are that require photo tracking.

One thing to bear in mind, Male Pattern Hair Loss generally occurs over several years and the process of stopping further hair loss and then actually stimulating regrowth does not happen in days – it is more like months (see “the hair growth cycle). So the bad news is that it will take months to see some differences, but the good news is you do not have to take loads of photos frequently to track you progress.

Key stages to track:

At Harley we request our clients upload their photos at key stages of the program where they can expect to see changes occurring.

  • Before commencing the program.

This gives us a baseline to compare against whilst on your journey.

  • 4 months

This is the first stage you will start to see some subtle changes to your hairline/crown.

The new fine hairs should have started to appear. Although you may not have noticed when looking in the mirror each morning a photographic image should be able to capture these changes.

  • 8 Months

This is the true time period you should really notice some significant changes to your hair coverage – the exciting part of the journey.

Any initial shedding that may have occurred when starting the program has well and truly grown back.

  • 12 months

At this stage you will have seen most of the potential of the program, hair has regrown and density and colour of new and existing hair has improved. It is a great time to realise your gains and capture them.

  • 24 months

Clinical studies show that participants can actually continue to see further improvements up to two years into their treatment and beyond. It is worth doing a comparison.

Following this time period, we would suggest you to continue to monitor your hair retention on a yearly basis.

How to capture the right images;

  • Consistency of the photos is the key to ensuring you can see the changes taking place for yourself
  • Find an area against a blank wall with ample natural daylight. Taking images at night with varying light conditions and using a flash do not produce quality photos for comparison.
  • When taking follow up images at later stages try to use the same location and same time of day. If this is not possible, try to find something similar. We want to compare apples with apples, not apples with pears!

The angles worth tracking;

Everyone will differ in the location of their problem areas. Considering it is so easy to snap a few photos from different angles we suggest you track the following.

NB: Selfie stick not required. All images are to be taken from a standing or upright seated position with your phone.This is how images should appear once cropped on the phone
